Endoscopic and orthotic treatment

Endoscopic procedure

New and less invasive technique for the treatment of patients with craniosynostosis has been developed in the recent years, in cooperation of the plastic surgery and neurosurgery. The endoscopic treatment of craniosynostoses is performed with one or two small incisions. The area above and below the skull is released with the use of endoscope, including the affected suture, which is removed under endoscopic control. The surgical procedure must be combined with subsequent orthotic treatment. The basic precondition of a successful endoscopic therapy is to initiate the treatment of craniosynostosis as soon as possible; the optimal time for endoscopic surgical procedure is between the second and sixth month of age. The main advantages of the endoscopic treatment are lower incidence of complications, smaller extent of the surgical procedure, small surgical wound, minor swelling, smaller blood loss, shorter period of hospitalization and long-term effect. As disadvantage may be regarded the fact, that the desired shape of the skull is not achieved immediately after the surgery but only after several months of using the cranial orthosis. However, the adjustment of the skull shape is permanent.

Cranial remodelling orthosis

Cranial remodelling orthosis is applied several days after the surgery. The purpose of the orthosis is to enable the growth of brain in the location of previously fused suture. At least three orthosis are applied in the course of treatment. The total period when wearing of orthosis is required is ten months.

Cranial remodelling orthosis is an individually made device, prepared on the basis of scanning. The scanner is safe for the eyes. There is a space left in the orthosis in the deformity area, in order to enable the skull growth. The orthosis is worn for 23 hours a day, one hour is intended for daily care, hygiene, etc. The wearing of orthosis begins with a slow mode, so that the child gets used to it. The orthosis is made of transparent material, enabling an easy detection of areas with excessive pressure, or monitoring the space left inside the orthosis. It is essential to come with the child for scheduled consultations with the physician. The orthosis is a safe, effective and well-tolerated device, associated with minimal risk.
